Shopify: Set up your Google tag

You can measure behavioral data about your site with Google Ads and Google Analytics. Follow the steps in this article to set up a tag for your Google Ads or Google Analytics account. Learn more about how to Install your Google tag with a website builder or CMS.

The instructions for setting up the Google tag are different for different tag IDs, so you’ll need to follow the instructions that correspond with your tag.


Before you begin

You can integrate your Shopify account with Google Ads or Google Analytics for free. To set up the integration, you’ll need:

If you have a tag starting with "AW-"

Tags that start with “AW-” are generally associated with Google Ads accounts.

Step 1 of 5: Install the Google & YouTube app

  1. Sign in to your Shopify account and download the “Google & Youtube” app.
  2. From your Shopify console, click the search bar and search “Google and YouTube”.
  3. You'll be taken to the Shopify App Store. Click Install to continue.
  4. Review the list of permissions required, then click Install to continue.
  5. If the app isn't connected to Google, click Connect Google account and choose the Google account that owns your Ads property.

Step 2 of 5: Connect your Google Ads account (Recommended)

  1. In the “Just want to set up Google Ads conversion measurement?" section, click Get started.
  2. You can set up your conversion measurement by choosing to:
  • Connect your Google Ads account from the “Your Google Account section”. Select your Google Ads account, and click Connect. Move on to the next step.
  • OR if you would like to skip connecting to your Ads account now, Select “Skip account connection”. Move on to the next step

Step 3 of 5: Set up conversion measurement

If you connected a Google Ads account:

  1. Under “Measure conversions”, you’ll find a list of Shopify events and destinations. When you link your Google Ads account, purchase, add to cart, checkout started conversion actions are the suggested default in Google Ads, and set as the account default. Shopify will map that to a Shopify event. Click confirm if you don’t want to update any of the events and destinations. Learn more about the Google & YouTube app event parameters.

  2. If you want to edit your conversion events and destinations, click Manage.
  3. Click the pencil icon next to the conversion action you’d like to change. You can select to:
    • Create a new action in the linked account
    • Select from linked account (if you have conversion actions set up in your Google Ads account)
    • Don’t measure in linked account
  4. You can also add custom Google Ads conversion or Floodlight destinations to receive data from the specified Shopify events
    • For Google Ads, enter the AW-CONVERSION_ID/CONVERSION_LABEL string found in your event snippet
  5. Click Save for each Shopify event you want to manage.
  6. When you are done updating the Shopify events, click Save.
  7. Review your Shopify events and Google Ads destinations, click Confirm.
  8. Confirm your enhanced conversions settings by clicking, Confirm. Note: You may not need to complete this step depending on your account setup.

If you skipped connecting a Google Ads account:

You can skip connecting a Google Ads account for the following reasons.

  • If you have more than one account to link. The Google & YouTube app only works for a single CID and is unable to set up tagging across a MCC or multiple CIDs using a single Shopify account.
  • You don’t see your destination showing up in the list of accounts to link because you don’t have admin access
  • Your account type is not supported by the Google & YouTube app, like Floodlight.
  1. If you want to skip account connection, click Yes, skip.
  2. Add custom Google Ads conversion (or Floodlight) destinations to receive data from the specified Shopify events
    • For Ads, enter the AW-CONVERSION_ID/CONVERSION_LABEL string found in your event snippet
    • For Floodlight, enter the DC-CONFIG_ID/ACTIVITY_GROUP_TAG_STRING/ACTIVITY_TAG_STRING+COUNTING_METHOD string found in your Google tag event snippet for tagging.
  3. Click Save for each Shopify event you want to manage.
  4. When you are done updating the Shopify events, click Save.
  5. Review your Shopify events and Google Ads destinations, click Confirm.

Step 4 of 5: Confirm Google tags

  1. Google tags are installed for each relevant service you connect to the Google & YouTube app. If the installed Google tag listed is correct, click Confirm.
  2. Click Add Google tag to manually add Google tags without connecting the associated account or property. You can connect your services on the Overview page.
  3. When you are done, click Save.
  4. If the installed Google tag listed is correct, click Confirm.
  5. Click Complete setup.

If you don’t complete all these steps you won’t be able to access your settings to make updates.

You can review your settings and tags by navigating to the “Settings” page.

  1. Navigate to the “Settings” page.
  2. In the “Conversion event settings” section or the “Google tags” section click Manage.
  3. You can manage your conversion event settings or manually add Google tags.
  4. When you are done, click Save.
  5. Click Complete setup.

Step 5 of 5: Verify your new conversion actions

Check that your new campaigns are bidding to the new conversion action and set it up as a primary conversion.

If you have a tag starting with "G-"

Tags that start with “G-” are generally associated with Google Analytics accounts.

Step 1 of 3: Install the Google & YouTube app

  1. Sign in to your Shopify account and download the “Google & Youtube” app.
  2. From your Shopify console, click the search bar and search “Google and YouTube”.
  3. You'll be taken to the Shopify App Store. Click Install to continue.

Step 2 of 3: Connect your Google Analytics web stream (Recommended)

  1. In the Overview page in the “Just want to set up Google Analytics 4"  section, click Get started.
  2. You can set up your Analytics measurement by choosing to:
    1. Connect your Google Analytics property from the “Your Google Account section”. 
    2. Select your Google Analytics property, and click Connect. Click Confirm.

Step 3 of 3: Add your Google tag for Analytics manually  (Alternative)

  1. In the Google & YouTube app, navigate to the “Settings” page.
  2. In the “Google tags” section click Manage.
  3. You can manually add Google tags for additional Google Analytics properties (or other Google services).
  4. When you are done, click Save.
  5. Click Complete setup.
Note: If you plan on using Google Analytics to track free listings and ads conversions, check how to avoid duplicating tracking events to ensure that you do not duplicate conversion tracking.
